The kingdom of the dead full#

They just ran away once saved offering no interesting dialogue or bonuses. When there were civilians to rescue I was doing it because they were in plain sight most of the time, though again I was left thinking, is this going to add anything? It did not. It gained nothing so I just stopped doing it. I did chase after them a few times, but there never felt a point to it. To pad things out, during the missions in Kingdom of the Dead there is a secondary objective that are always simple to complete, like getting a blueprint. The audio doesn’t make them sound good either. Sadly, never has a shotgun felt so lacklustre or a minigun lacked punch. You will have seen every enemy type by the mid-point of the game so it loses your interest quickly. However, the gunplay is rather boring as are the enemies. This is smoothly done, and running and jumping feels very quick and easy to hurdle through the levels. Weapons are picked up by running across them floating in mid-air, ammo is found by smashing other boxes, and there are no stamina counters so you can constantly run. There’s no crouching behind a wall and getting some life regen here. Think back to older 90s shooters in that there are a set number of lives that once depleted send you back to the last checkpoint.

The gameplay in Kingdom of the Dead itself is nothing like modern games. Shame really, as excluding any visual bother it’s certainly different. sepia, inverted style, etc., but all modes caused me to suffer the same. It does include options to change up the colouring e.g. It could just be my eyes, but I found it caused quite a bit of strain and was jarring at times.

It’s a pen and ink drawing style with the monochrome making it feel a bit like indie darling Return of the Obra Dinn, and I have never had a game’s visuals bother me… until this. Let’s talk about the distinctive part though, the games visuals! It has a unique art style which is going to be marmite – you’ll either love it or hate it.

It’s bang on with first person shooter bit though, so full marks there. You can see the reasoning behind the theme with it relating to the dead, but there really is nothing remotely scary here. Kingdom of the Dead classes itself as a horror first person shooter, and I’d have to strongly disagree on the horror aspect as I’ve had scarier poops. That’s about as interesting as it gets story wise, I’m afraid. Playing as an agent known as Chamberlain who works for a secret part of the government with the sole aim of defeating the undead, and closing the gates they’ve come through, it’s a pretty simple objective – shut the portals and eventually face the personification of Death and defeat them. Bringing a unique monochromatic art style to the FPS genre, will we be feasting on the corpses of our slain foes in true horror style, or shrugging of the jump scares as if they were nothing? From basic undead minions wielding swords to giant eyeballs that shoot light bombs, and even stumbling across a few wearing 10 gallon hats waving guns around, they’re all there to be put back in the ground. As the title of Kingdom of the Dead suggests we are here to slay the undead. Here we go, my latest review in what’s a busy schedule for games despite it only being so early in the year.
